Room 10's Field Trip to the Military Museum

Hello Room 10 parents

We went on a field trip to the Military Museum on October 23. The purpose of this field trip was to learn about the stories of the Indigenous people of Alberta. More specifically we learnt about the stories of the Indigenous veterans in Canada.

We learnt about Mike Mountainhorse he was an Indigenous veteran in WWI who told his story on a story robe. One story that he shared on his robe was when they scared some other soldiers out of a home and got to eat their hot meal. We had a chance to make our own story robe about events in our lives that were important to us. Below are some examples of our story robes.

Our next stop was going to the airplane hanger where we got to see real jets from the Cold War. We also saw a replica of a shelter that people would hide in during the Cold War.

Here is some of us looking at some of the suits that the pilots would wear.

Here we are listening to our wonderful volunteer Maryliz telling us about her childhood growing up during the Cold War. Her father was a pilot in the army and they had to move to Germany. We loved hearing her stories.

After looking at the planes we had a really cool presentation about some of Canada's Indigenous Veterans. Did you know that there were over 1,200 Indigenous Veterans that served in the Canadian Army?

One of our favorite parts of the day was the artifact circle where we got to touch many different artifacts that Indigenous veterans would use during wars. Bellow is a Buffalo hide shield we learnt that the Indigenous used this to protect themselves. We also learnt about how there are no more Prairie Buffalo they are all extinct. Our tour guide told us that now all we have is Wood Buffalo he told us a great story about when Wood Buffalo run through the forest it sounds like a lightning storm because they knock down all of the trees.

We all learnt that the Indigenous people would camouflage themselves with Snowy Owl feathers because they would blend in with the snow.

We had an amazing day at the Military Museum! Thank you to the Museum for having us. As well as thank you to our wonderful volunteers without you it would not have been the same.
