Testing Building Materials

Dear families,

In Room 10 and 11, we have been learning about the water crisis in the four countries we're studying: Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. We are putting on our engineering/science hats and using the engineering design process to solve one of these problems. After spring break, we will begin testing building materials and their effectiveness and strength so we know what to include in our designs and prototypes.

We need YOUR help!

Please help us collect materials to test and build with. We are looking for the following items:

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Fabric/Cloth
  • Plastic Cups/Bottles
  • Yarn/String
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Straws
  • Cardboard
  • Twist Ties
  • Rubber bands
  • Tissue Paper
  • Wax Paper
  • Sticks
  • Foam
  • Cheesecloth
  • Sand
  • Rocks
  • Clay/Plasticine

Thanks for your ongoing support in our learning! Have a great spring break!

March Math Game

Hello parents and guardians,

We hope you are having a great week and enjoying the sunshine. With spring break coming up next week it is a great opportunity to play a math game with your child. Attached below is our March math game. It is a multiplication and division tic tac toe which incorporates all the things your child has been learning thus far.

Happy playing.

Kind regards,

Sunshine brings puddles

Hello parents and guardians,

Image result for rain boots clip artIt is going to be a beautiful week and with that brings puddles. There is going to be a lot of ice on the school property in the early morning that will turn to puddles by mid afternoon.  Students have been reminded to watch carefully for slippery areas, walk like a penguin and wear footwear that is safe and suitable for wet weather (running shoes are not recommended).  All students were cautioned to stay out of the puddle if they didn't have waterproof boots.  We are asking students to bring an extra pair of pants and socks in their backpacks to change into in the event they fall and get wet.  Being wet is a natural consequence to wadding into the large puddle after being cautioned to stay out if you don't have proper footwear. At least a change of clothes will make things a bit better.

Thank you for your constant support

Figurative Language

The Grade 3/4 students in room 11 have been learning about figurative language. Figurative language is you don't mean exactly what you say and you make a comparison. The types of figurative language we've learned about are idioms, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, metaphor, similes and personification. For example, "My thirsty lawn was begging for water." This week we are illustrating different types of similes.

Take a look at our visualizations!

Louder than a clap of thunder

Today we had a new poem of the week and we started sketching ideas for our new art project using 3D shapes and value scales. In grade 4s, we practiced building all possible arrays for 20, 30, 40 and 50 objects. Try it at home!

Kindness is stronger than bullying!

For this Pink Shirt Day, we decided to focus on friendship and kindness as a cure for bullying. We each thought of positive words for each of the friends in our class community.

These were the words we came up with to describe one another.

If we can all remember to be kind and welcoming, we can make our school a more positive place.
