WE Walk For Water

WE Walk For Water

Hello everyone! ME to WE is hosting the fundraiser; We Walk For Water on May 10th. This campaign is about raising money for those communities without fresh and clean water sources.  Some people have to walk miles to be able to get to a water source and some of these sources are contaminated. This causes many young children, majority of them being young girls, to be unable to attend school and get a proper education. We are asking everyone at CJP to bring a loonie or a toonie for donations for the We Walk for Water campaign. Just $25 will allow one individual to be able to access clean water for life. Everyone deserves access to clean water, but not everyone can afford it.

The Water Walk will take place on Friday May 10th on the outside field rain or shine.  Instead of using actual jugs of water or pebbles, students will bring their backpacks outside.  Students will hold their backpack over their head and walk around the field to complete laps. This symbolizes the long walk to water that many young children face in other countries.

Some facts to inspire you to participate in the We Walk for Water fundraiser:
·       42% of health care facilities including hospitals and local clinics in Africa do not have access to a clean and non-contaminated water sources.
·       Nearly 900 children die per day due to diseases caused by contaminated water.
·       By 2050, 1 in 4 people will live where there is no fresh water

Thanks for your support!

Dear families,

It was so wonderful to see all the families that came out to share in the learning from our most recent artist residency. CJP students have been working hard at learning the style of hip-hop and the choreography and we hope you enjoyed our performances. Thank you to the parent association as well as our lovely choreographer/instructor, Zam.

And thanks to all of you who continue to support our learning everyday!

Music Monday

Dear families,

Please join us on Monday, May 6th at 10:00am to celebrate Music Monday!

For those who may not know, Music Monday was created by the Coalition for Music Education as a way to raise awareness for the importance of music education. Together, schools and other musical organizations across Canada sing the Music Monday anthem on the first Monday each May. This year, the Music Monday anthem is Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson. Students have learned about the history of this song, its meaning and the people it impacted. Please ask your child for more information!

At CJP, it is tradition to have an outdoor concert on Music Monday. This year, our concert will be on Monday, May 6th at 10:00am on the CJP field. Families and community members are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blankets to watch comfortably from the field. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Nair at canair@cbe.ab.ca

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Thank you for your support.

Special Guest Next Week

Dear families,

We've had a very busy week! At the beginning of this week, the grade 4s had a special presentation on cyberbullying and cyber-safety. In our classrooms, we've decided to continue and extend this learning. Room 11 students are working on Public Service Announcements (PSA) to show our understanding and persuade others to use devices thoughtfully and responsibly. We can't wait to show you on Thursday.

In addition to our classroom learning, we have a very special guest coming on Wednesday, April 10 at 11:00. Paul Davis will be taking time out of his busy schedule to answer questions that our students have about technology use and share his expertise on the subject. If you were not able to attend his event in January, or you would like to learn more, you are welcome to come to CJP to listen in.

Thanks for your continued support in our learning and have a great weekend!

We are all treaty people / As long as the sun shines

Today, we were fortunate to have Quest Theatre come and present a play to our school about Canada's history with the First Nations and signing treaties. This is what we learned:

The newcomers were really mean and they signed this treaty and broke the treaty and started to take over and kill First Nations. - Megan S.

The newcomers had a bad disease. - Kai F.

The disease is small pox, which is related to chicken pox. - Kellan

We learned how the newcomers signed a treaty and before they signed each treaty, and they gave First Nations whiskey. They had water in their cups instead of whiskey. There were eleven treaties signed, altogether. - Henry

Even though the First Nations signed the treaty, the newcomers didn't keep their promise and they would still take their other land.  -Megan G.

The newcomers set up trading stands and traded whiskey and other things for buffalo pelts. - Simon

The newcomers, as they came, they changed how the first nations people spoke, ate, dressed and what kind of houses they lived in. -Artie

The newcomers came on ships. -Matilda

Thanks for learning with us!

Tuesday, April 2nd

On Thursday April 4th, students and staff are encouraged to wear blue and/or purple in support of Autism and Epilepsy awareness. Both of the official awareness days occurred independently within the past week and they hoped to bring understanding and acceptance to the challenges and the joys that those with Autism or Epilepsy experience.

Today the grade 4s had a presentation about cyber bullying and being safe on the internet. We found a website to tell you if you have a secure or unsecure password. Click here to check it out! Did you know if you spend too much time on social media it can be bad for your brain, health and eyes.

Remember, your kids are more important than your computer and electronics. - Artie

We tested our materials for building and solving the water problem. Don’t forget to continue to look for materials at home to build with.

The grade 3s got to make paper helicopters. Cut out a rectangle and cut to the middle with scissors. Split the wings out, one to the right and one to the left. Then under the wings, leave a little rectangle. Cut a bit, fold it in (both sides). Put a paperclip on the bottom and then you have a helicopter. - Kellan

In math, the grade 4s started planning out what foods to put in our meal plan and we will start calculating soon.

Today we practiced soccer in gym, while room 10 got to play badminton.

We started planning out our inventions for the water problem. - Artie

We are working on building a prototype to see if we can help solve the water problem in four countries. - Matilda

Please try and find materials and stuff to build with! - Megan S.

In gym, we practiced badminton. We learned how to serve properly and hit. - Bennett

We also had the entire gym to ourselves because room 10 was outside practicing soccer. - Isla

Tomorrow we get to go outside to play soccer. - Parker

We are starting a new thing in math (grade 3); division! - Alex
