Karate!

We started a new Phys. Ed. unit; karate! In karate, we learned how to start; with three bows. One bow is to say thank you to the creator of karate, the second is to the sensei and the third is to our friends/family/team. Next, we learned how to block properly. The types of blocks that we learned were double block, high block, low block and circle block. Everybody learned how to keep themselves safe when they're in danger. Also, we learned how to punch properly without breaking our thumbs. Lastly, the type of martial arts we are learning about is from Japan. We learned how to count to ten in Japanese! That's what we did today in karate.

A Step To Growth Mindset

Dear families,

Today we took our shoe drawings from last week and began learning about how to give and receive thoughtful, specific feedback. We used the TAG strategy for giving feedback.

Tell me what I did well.
Ask me questions about my work.
Give me a suggestion.

"It's important to do TAG to make people feel confident and happy about their work and then you can give suggestions." - Megan S.

"I feel very good about myself because people said what I did good." - Alex

"When you have a growth mindset, you're thinking about what you did good and you're not having a fixed mindset because you're getting feedback from people." ... "You're helping get better at taking suggestions and not getting upset quickly." - Megan G.

"The TAG strategy is important because it increases your growth mindset quicker and it helps you get better growth mindset." - Artie

Valentines Day

Hello parents

We hope you had a relaxing weekend. As many of you are aware Valentines day is fast approaching. As we do not have school on Thursday we will be doing our exchanges on Wednesday. Can you please provide your child with an empty Kleenex box or shoebox to put their valentines in. Please refrain from sending your child with any class treats as we will not be having a class party. Wednesday is a day to show our respect and gratitude for one another.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,Image result for valentines cards clipart

Faceoff/War

Dear families,

Here's a math game to help you practice basic operations.

Materials:
  • A deck of cards
  • 2 players
  1. Deal all of the cards so that each player has half of the deck. Keep the pile face down.
  2. Decide between you and your partner if face cards will be taken as a 10 or 0.
  3. Both players will flip their top card at the same time. The first person to correctly add/subtract/multiply the two flipped numbers will keep both cards and put them at the bottom of their pile.
  4. If both students answer the math fact at the same time, they will each flip another card. The first person to correctly answer the new problem, will keep all four of the cards.
  5. The winner is the person with the most cards when playing time is complete.
Happy mathing!

Updates

Class photos will be on Thursday, February 7

Polar Bear Club
During indoor recess days, the Polar Bear Club offers the option to go outside for play and physical activity, improving mood, attention and fitness for students. Students who have returned a permission form signed by a parent or guardian and are properly dressed will have the choice to go outside or stay inside during indoor lunch recess. If your child is interested in having the option to participate each time a Polar Bear Club is called, please complete and sign the form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Young Writers' Convention (YWC)
Students should go to the learning commons on Thursday, February 7 if they are interested in learning about the YWC, an opportunity to learn more about writing from keynote speakers and authors. We are looking for students who have a desire or passion to write, regardless of their current writing skills.

Look-alike Day: This Friday, students should find a friend (or friends) and dress exactly alike! If you don't know who to match with, feel free to wear a red shirt and dark pants.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN GRADES 4!!!

From mid January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. The Accountability Pillar Survey uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality. In mid-January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 across Alberta will receive a survey from Alberta Education in the mail which can be returned directly to Alberta Education in the self-addressed, stamped envelope provided.

In February, students in grades 4 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. Survey results will be available to jurisdictions in May, and will be reported publicly by jurisdictions as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports. All surveys are anonymous and ask respondents about their experiences with their school.

The Accountability Pillar Survey provides an opportunity for Alberta Education, school authorities and local schools to ensure that we’re equipping students for success. Your participation in the survey is very important, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

I would like to point out that answering “I don’t know” to a question is treated as a negative response (disagree) to that question. It would be more beneficial for us if parents answered either “Strongly Agree”, “Agree”, “Disagree” or “Strongly Disagree”. This would give us a clearer indication of how parents felt we were doing on this indicator.

If you require more information to answer a particular question, please contact Dr. Bettesworth or Ms. Sharpe at the school. On behalf of Captain John Palliser School, thank you for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback regarding the educational services we provide your child. Please contact me at the school if you have any further questions regarding this survey.
